We would like to convey a massive thank you to every special individual from the countless amount of people who attended our large tree planting event at Rowlands Dell on Friday (21.2.25). The Inland Revenue (30 plus) and the NHS property services (10 plus) teams dedicated their corporate social value time and a daunting amount of energy to make a beautiful and incredible difference to our community’s environment. They joined the Friends of Maghull & District’s (FOMD) half term family friendly tree planting day (pictured and many more not pictured).

In the three hours we planted 600 trees in the form of woodland and hedging, with canes, eco-plastic guards and transported almost seven tons of woodchip around every tree to provide an attractive mulch to maximise hydration and suppress competitive weeds. They achieved so much in each of the difficult to plant zones:

The Families – focused on planting a mixed woodland area utilising 40 trees (comprising of eight species) and even had time to create a small mixed wildlife friendly hedge on the woodland perimeter near the rise of the new path comprising of 48 trees. Supported by Diane, Joan, and Jill.

The First Inland Revenue Team, probably had the hardest task to dig two trench rows to plant the 225 Yew trees (provided by a significant grant awarded by The Tree Council) due to a surprising array of roots and debris, despite a previous clearance.

The Second Inland Revenue Team were joined by the NHS Property Services Team who created a 141m mixed wildlife friendly hedge along the perimeter bordering Westway, utilising 295 trees This also had its challenges as the grassed areas required the turf to be removed and reinserted upside down around each of the newly planted trees. Nevertheless, they have created what will be a stunning feature that will reduce noise and pollution from cars, while providing habitat and food for wildlife and a tranquil NHS haven for health and wellness.

Everyone really worked tirelessly to make the whole experience far less ‘taxing’ for our enormously grateful community, who will benefit from this inspiring green legacy transformation at the very heart of our community.

It was a real privilege to be part of this fantastic event where everyone was incredibly enthusiastic, good-humoured, kind and generous, demonstrating the human spirit at its very best, for the benefit of others and the environment.

Roll Call Of Thanks:

  • FOMD Volunteers (including previous support from the Inland Revenue team) for the unprecedented environmental cleanup to enable the planting over the last year.
  • The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) for the free tree donations.
  • The Tree Council (Geraldine and her team in London) for the incredible grant support to purchase the beautiful 225 Yew trees to form a hedge 1m away from the sandstone wall.
  • JA Jones Tree Nursery and particularly the driver Hayley who helped me individually offload 225 heavy trees, at the crack of dawn!
  • Colin (Hare & Hounds landlord) for allowing the trees to be unloaded in his car park.
  • The NHS Property Services Team who are also the landowners whose support has been immeasurable in particular Scott, Phil, Nicola and Simon.
  • The Inland Revenue team, many of whom supported the cleanup previously and came back for more! In particular, we are immensely grateful to Graeme who worked so hard to facilitate their invaluable support.
  • All the super friendly families and community volunteers who popped along for the event.
  • Alison (LCP) for allowing our volunteers park beyond the three hour limit. Mike (new owner of Bryant House) for allowing the volunteers to use his car park for free.
