After Friday’s (21.2.25) unprecedented three-hour local volunteer engagement the momentum was continued when we were joined on Saturday (22.2.25) for two hours by the most enthusiastic, environmentally conscious and inspiring local Scout group. The 16 scouts and their leaders worked wonders for the good of our community and precious environment.
They cheerfully achieved the following in such a short period of time on a lovely sunny morning:
- Debris Removal. Meticulously gathered a huge array of rocks, litter, debris that had been churned up following yesterday’s mass tree planting of 809 trees, despite FOMD’s previous cleanups when we had removed 267 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris! Huge thanks to their Scout leader (Gareth) who created an introductory video below, as part of a grant application.
- Tree Planting. After Sarah had professionally strimmed a section of vegetation, supported by Shameem, the scouts planted 200 mixed wildlife friendly hedge whip trees, in front of the new upper pathway. In addition, they inserted canes and protective guards and wheelbarrowed tons of woodchip and spread it around the base of the trees to provide an attractive mulch that hydrates the trees and suppresses competitive weeds, to maximise future growth. The hedge will not only provide an attractive feature but reduces car pollution by 60%,’s sequesters carbon, provides food and habitat for wildlife.
Thank you to:
- The amazing 12th Maghull Scout group, for their invaluable environmental cleanup and planting. In addition, the 12th Maghull have been amazing with the previous support dedicating a couple of evenings to the original big cleanup and planting bulbs at Woodend to provide Maghull’s biggest daffodil display.
- Sarah (Saxon Tree Services) who volunteers regularly, started half an hour early, to undertake the important strimming and worked tirelessly for the remaining two hours.
- Shameem (local resident who recently donated a memorial tree) who kindly helped throughout.
- Paul and Harry Richards (Richards Tree Services) who have remarkably and generously provided 7 tons of absolutely invaluable woodchip for this project and for many other important community projects over the last 5 years.
It was a beautiful sunny day in many ways, with a richly deserved picnic at the end, using the newly installed picnic tables overlooking the Dell. It was a complete joy to hear the laughter and banter as they tucked in for a richly deserved celebration, as I packed up. FOMD’s NHS Rowlands Dell Health & Wellness Project continues to be a remarkable community journey over the last year with so many people to be grateful to, whilst the last two community volunteer days (21/22.2.25) have provided a really practical, inspiring and heartwarming boost towards the restoration of this communal legacy haven.
