The Friends Of Maghull & District’s (FOMD) Rowlands’ Dell Project Awarded a Grant from The People’s Postcode Lottery Grassroots Grants Programme (14.1.26)

FOMD has been awarded a £2000 grant made possible thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery

Project Introduction

FOMD’s Award Winning Rowlands’ Dell NHS Health and Wellness Green Transformation Project is an unprecedented transformation of a historic quarry in the centre of Maghull, which had become inaccessible and blighted with 30 years of pollution. Recognising the health and wellness legacy benefits of restoring this green space we partnered with the NHS landowners to create a three-year three stage plan. The first two stages have resulted in making the Dell (1) safe by spending one year removing pollutants in the town’s largest ever cleanup (300 binbags of litter and 25 tons of debris), (2) making the Dell accessible with Maghull’s largest social value grant resulting in a myriad of accessibility features. Whilst the ongoing stage (3) has involved raising funds (2025/26) to complete the final accessibility features and crucially restore nature with four distinct biodiverse co-dependent nature areas to provide a restorative legacy haven for the whole community.

The Grassroots Grants programme, which is a partnership between People’s Postcode Lottery and Groundwork, has helped 400 small, local organisations in England through unrestricted funding that supports the important work organisations deliver in their communities. The funding offered is unrestricted and therefore flexible. It can be used where it is most needed.

The grant programme is made possible thanks to funds raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and is awarded through Postcode Local Trust, Postcode Places Trust, Postcode Neighbourhood Trust and Postcode Society Trust.

Dr Frank Sharp (FOMD) said: “We would like to express our immense gratitude on behalf of our community to receive this precious contribution and their shared vision from the People’s Postcode Lottery which has enabled FOMD to achieve our £4620 target to complete a final 35 m long stepped path. The path is a wonderful recycling opportunity as it is composed of compressed plainings (recycled road tarmac often used in country parks)”. The new path is crucial as it provides a safe ascending connection between the main lower woodland area to the upper picnic/viewing/orchard/Medical Centre area and the Wishing Well. The wishing well is already filling up with coins for wishes. However, it is safe to say that many of our wishes have been coming true particularly with the support of The People’s Postcode Lottery and crowdfunding donors to create this wonderful connecting path for the benefit of the NHS users and local community.

Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “We are delighted that players of People’s Postcode Lottery will support small community-based organisations through this funding opportunity, thanks to our partnership with Groundwork UK. I encourage smaller, local charities and groups to visit our trust websites for more details.”

The People’s Postcode Lottery Grassroots Grants Fund is administered by the national community charity, Groundwork.

Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s UK Chief Executive, said: “The value of locally led action is second to none when it comes to making lasting positive change in the communities which need it most. Unrestricted funding for small organisations with expert local knowledge and lived experience is a key component to ensuring communities can take control of their own destinies, and we’re pleased to be working with the Community Programmes team at People’s Postcode Lottery to provide this.”
