The Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) are incredibly grateful to Dowhigh Construction’s Trevor Murray (director and owner) who donated eight tons of grit sand to Maghull’s ‘Parkbourn Wildflower Garden’ (pictured 28.1.26), following kind contact from their ex-employee and volunteer – Colin.

With a quick telephone call to the super friendly and altruistic Trevor (pictured helping at Woodend 2020) who personally took all the details, confirmed within minutes, delivered early the following morning on a huge lorry which Les craned into place on top of the rolls of weed suppressant membrane donated from the sad closure of Windmill Nursery (Lydiate).

I was then joined by Paul Pruden (Horticultural Manager for Mersey Care NHS Trust) who unbelievably rolled his sleeves up in between meetings and helped me wheelbarrow, shovel and rake the mounds into place. Paul and his amazing team originally supported the creation of this green transformation in 2018 alongside the local community (pictured 2019).

Over the years we’ve had some limited success with growing wild flowers in this triangular space, but following brilliant advice from Christine Leung and Richard Scott (locally based national wildflower experts), they advised that we had been too kind to the wildflowers by providing the original 6 inches of topsoil and that wildflowers thrive on less fertile mediums particularly grit sand. They have invited us to obtain plant donations and seeds for March planting and sowing to provide an annual and perennial summer display. We then hope to emulate the stunning displays pictured whilst in Germany and then roll it out at other sites over the years in Maghull.
