Although the Friends of Maghull and District (FOMD) meet twice a week to galvanise the community into making Maghull a better place to live, mainly through environmental projects that have involved multiple award-winning transformations of neglected green spaces and planting 18,000 trees over the last four years, we and other like-minded local groups work tirelessly everyday behind the scenes organising the events with multiple grant applications and so much more.

More information about World Environmental Day can be found at the foot of the post.

Last Wednesday (4.6.25) we met to undertake an annual maintenance at our first inspiring and confidence building project to maintain the progress made from its inception in 2018. Where this small site was the source of 20 years of the most profound ASB that you would never associate with Maghull, until our community transformation created a tranquil wildflower garden triangle.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank Jill, Linda (pictured) and Frank who undertook the following in our one-hour session:

  • Completed the weeding of the outside border filling one agricultural bag that was taken to the recycling centre.
  • Installed a Belfast style sink (courtesy of Linda and Dave) in the wildflower triangle next to the beautiful bug hotel, that in most instances will attract a whole new level wildlife and biodiversity through this little space.
  • We are also grateful to Joan who did some fantastic solo weeding at Woodend community woodland project border throughout the week

Apart from the Ormskirk/Liverpool trains rattling by it is a tranquil restorative jewel tucked away on a rear service road to Parkbourn Square which has received thousands of hits on Google over the last year!

Please Help with Crowdfunding Donations for Rowlands Dell.

You have raised £1924.14 in three weeks and now need an outstanding £8777 before October (138 days!), to pay for a lower connecting path (creating a circular health and wellness walk) and a huge array of much-needed woodland plants.

Background to Rowlands Dell.

This beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 266 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris. In the two months of Stage II, that was completed in November, with our NHS landowner partners (expertly installed by subcontractors – PR England Landscapers) using a health and wellness grant fund (representing Maghull’s largest green investment) have installed an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations to provide accessibility for the whole community (accessible path, viewing/picnic area, sunken garden, bins, 10,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points, bug and bird boxes, and a dry waterfall feature). We are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help.

Huge thanks to one and all,

FOMD

Together making Maghull a better place to live.

World Environment Day

“One of the first conditions of happiness is that the link between man and nature shall not be broken,” said Leo Tolstoy. The relationship between human beings and the environment is important and it is necessary that they understand and work to keep it strong.

World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year. It is celebrated to raise awareness and to take actions to conserve the environment. It was initiated in 1972 by the UN Assembly and has come a long way since. The concern for preserving the environment did not just start then. People have been taking initiatives to do whatever is possible on their own, to make life better for everyone by creating awareness about preserving nature. Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” and that is exactly what all of us are here to do today. Let us join together and do our part in making our environment and our life on this planet as wondrous as it should be.
