We are absolutely delighted to announce that, out of 300 national nominees, Maghull has won the distinguished UK 2025 BBC The One Show/RHS ‘Growing Together’ Community Gardening Award. This recognition, announced by Tom Allen on The One Show (1.10.25), was presented to the Friends of Maghull & District’s (FOMD) Rowlands Dell Health and Wellness Project (pictured) and was subsequently featured with a live broadcast from the Dell on BBC Good Morning Live (7.10.25).
‘This accolade stands as a testament to the brimming melting pot of community kindness from everyone who has contributed to the project’.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Park Ward and Sefton who through their amazingly supportive councillors have donated £1000 (April ward funds) and pledged £3100 (community transition fund for November 2025) respectively, that will be used to part fund a future pathway and planting at Rowlands Dell. Every precious donation ranging from the 2024 NHS social value £83,000 grant to the hands-on clearance work and the motivational thank you has been inspirational, invaluable and celebrated on every occasion. Please see our roll call of kindness in our press release on the day the award was announced at https://www.fomd.co.uk/whoopee-maghull-are-winners-of-a-prestigious-uk-award-on-national-tv/
Dr Frank Sharp, FOMD.
Rowlands Dell was named in honour of the late Dr John Rowlands, a much-respected GP, and is situated between his co-founded Westway Medical Centre and the historic Hare & Hounds PH. In partnership with NHS Property Services, FOMD launched Maghull’s unparalleled environmental transformation in 2024, guided by a three-stage plan (safety, accessibility, nature restoration). This effort, implemented by FOMD volunteers and supported by the NHS and local stakeholders, aimed to convert a severely polluted and previously inaccessible historic quarry into a sustainable green restorative legacy haven benefitting both wildlife and the community, amid an increasingly busy neighbouring town centre.
Over 46 weeks, significant (1) ‘safety’ improvements were achieved. Thirty years of pollutants were removed, resulting in 300 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris.
A major NHS social value grant and other funding supported new (2) ‘accessibility’ features, including disabled access: pathway, picnic area, sunken garden, and more.
To (3) ‘revive nature’, four tranquil woodland zones are being created in the Dell for eco-education, biodiversity, and community involvement.
To support this and other exciting ongoing projects in Maghull (e.g. increasing our 18,000 previous trees planted), please visit www.fomd.co.uk, where you may donate, volunteer via the yellow Donate button and Events tab, explore current initiatives, or find updates under FOMD News or Related News tabs.
Finally, without the town hall, we thank Maghull Town Council for their exemplary resilience and Parkhaven Trust for kindly accommodating FOMD with a temporary base.
Wishing Maghull a very happy, healthy, and Merry Christmas.
FOMD.
Maghull’s Cherished Community Magazine Is Back: thanks to extraordinary council resilience.
The 7th edition of ‘Your MAGhull’ quarterly community magazine, was suspended throughout most of 2025 due to the tragic fire at our community’s town hall on the 14.2.25. However, due to the incredible resilience of our community’s town councillors and officers, the town hall, magazine and countless services have either been maintained or are being re-established potentially even better than before.
‘Your Maghull’ was created in December 2022, following the sad loss of the popular Champion Newspaper (free weekly community newspaper delivered to 160,000 homes). Created in the belief that without communication a community cannot be a community – providing opportunities for information sharing between schools, councils, community groups, businesses, churches to create shared visions, belongingness and pride for our town’s future.
This Christmas edition is bulging with helpful community updates and a fantastic focus on how our council will be rebuilding our town hall, based on extensive public and expert consultation to deliver an asset that will flexibly meet our towns future needs at the very heart of our community.
The community magazine is currently being delivered to every house in Maghull and is also available online at https://maghull-town-council.paperturn-view.com/e7-your-maghull?pid=ODk8918322&source=qr

With immense thanks and Merry Christmas to all the unsung staff and councillors at Maghull Town Council for striving to seamlessly provide a normal and improved service despite the most challenging of times throughout this year.
