We were absolutely delighted and enormously grateful to receive a visit from BBC Radio Merseyside presenter Helen Jones (pictured), who took some time out of her busy schedule to visit Maghull’s Rowlands NHS Dell to record a broadcast, to celebrate the community volunteer work and to highlight our current crowdfunding campaign to help complete Maghull’s largest green transformation project. We are also very grateful to Maghull’s multi award-winning horticulturist and new RHS Judge – Don Billington (pictured) for kindly helping to arrange the special visit.

The lovely 10 minutes edited recording was broadcast on Friday 4.7.25 and is available in the BBC sounds link below at 15:20 hours or 1 hour 20 minutes into the programme. It provides a nice introduction to the achievements, aspirations and how to help this special green transformation. Helen’s shows provide an uplifting afternoon of music, humour and fascinating subjects.

Quotes from Helen Jones (4.7.25)

‘The people of Maghull have come together to breathe new life into Rowlands Dell.

Since we’ve been here a young family have just passed, there’s a lady walking her dog, another person keeping fit.

It’s brilliant volunteer work and it just looks wonderful.

I’ve only been here a short time, but it is truly spectacular.

It’s wonderful to hear the birds singing’.

Background to Rowlands Dell.

This beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 266 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris.

In Stage II (completed in November), with the help our NHS landowner partners we successfully obtained health and wellness grant (Maghull’s largest green investment) to fund an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations.  These features provided accessibility for the whole community and included: accessible path, viewing/picnic area, sunken garden, bins, 10,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points, bug and bird boxes, and a dry waterfall feature).

We are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help.

Many Thanks and Best Wishes,

Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD)

Together making Maghull a better place to live.
