The Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) returned to St Gregory’s Primary School (Lydiate) on Wednesday (22.1.25) and completed the planting of a 950-tree hawthorn hedge on two sides of the huge playing field amounting to about 178 m, as part of a massive local FOMD tree planting initiative. The incredible volunteers listed below turned up on a cold damp foggy morning to check and secure healthy planting of the 800 planted with the schoolchildren on the all-day event the previous Friday (17.1.25) and planted a further 150. We can’t thank them enough for their hard work, camaraderie and good humour throughout, in what seemed like an endless perimeter of hedge planting stretching into the distance. We are returning in February to plant a further 500 woodland trees.
Benefits:
- Providing wildlife habitat, food and sequestering carbon for climate action.
- Providing eco-educational experience and teamwork skills for every single child in the school.
- Providing a sense of health and wellness not only for the school but for the wider community that the hedge and woodland borders.
Thanks. Despite the absence of some of our regular fantastic volunteers we were gratefully joined and supported by:
- FOMD volunteers – Pauline, Sonia, Joan, Diane, John, Christine, Ros (pictured) and Frank
- Saxon Tree Services – Tom and Luke (pictured – contact information below)
- Mersey Forest senior project officer – Ben Greenaway (pictured)
- Caretaker – Dave Jones
- The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) for granting our application last year for the free Hawthorn trees that we received two week ago and kept alive for the planting.

A heartfelt thank you for this outstanding unprecedented volunteering that is making a massive difference to our local environment and planet, which is part of 2500 trees to be planted before March, culminating in over 16,000 over the last three years in Maghull.
Please Register ASAP to Help.
FOMD is only a small group, and our success has been achieved by bringing the community together. Consequently, we need everyone to register their interest for this massive tree planting program continuing until March, by sending your contact details to admin@fomd.co.uk so we can get in touch with news of drop in planting dates between February and March. Please help our community to continue making a difference to our environment and do our bit for climate action. No commitment but any time you can give short or long will be invaluable and a bit of healthy fun along the way.
With Immense Gratitude,
FOMD
