Regeneration.

It was with great sadness that following several years of reprieve and remediation attempts, another risk assessment meant that the ancient iconic Horse Chestnut tree, that teamed with biodiversity, needed to be reduced to a 15 foot stump. However, as hoped by the tree surgeons the tree is showing positive signs of regeneration.

Restoration.

Nevertheless, without the beautiful tree canopy the area was looking rather barren consequently we are delighted to have gratefully received and planted (15.4.25) a weeping willow and a plum cherry trees donated by local residents Linda and Jon, and a large willow donated by James. We are hoping that this will be joined by a memorial bench providing views of the three connecting tree blossoming paths comprising of Crabapple/Cherry, Wisteria, and Laburnum respectively.

Boost for Maghull’s Children’s Nature Corner.

Over a year ago, we created a children’s nature corner, that we recently enhanced with the installation of a donated Belfast Sink (courtesy of Marion), tadpoles (from Joan), and used £25 of our donations to insert five aeriation plants, a marginal plant, a lily, planted donated irises in the surround (courtesy of James) and created a platform to enable wildlife access. It is well known that introducing a wildlife friendly water feature can invite and enhance biodiversity, that will be a thrill and education for everyone including our friends at the neighbouring Bumbles Children’s Nursery. Finally, a special thank you to Harry and Paul Richards (local tree surgeons) for the huge donation of woodchip that we utilised for the nature corner path.

Background to the Woodend Community Woodland Project

In 2019, the Woodend/Bobby’s Wood (junction of Liverpool Road, South and Northway) was an uninspiring space/drab entrance to Maghull and unusable by most people and wildlife, and a potential magnet for even more housebuilding in Maghull.

In 2020, at the height of the pandemic restrictions the Friends of Maghull and District (FOMD) unbelievably raised more than £30,000 (doubled over the years), to make the area a safe, accessible, interesting and naturally beautiful area that has become a regular destination.

Woodend was transformed by creating an ‘accessible’ 230m Cotswolds style path. A ‘safe’ 230m perimeter fence and wildlife friendly hedging. Created a new 50x4m border planted with over 500 plant donations. Planted and installed: 2,500 trees, 5,000 bulbs, benches, bins, noticeboard, rockery, children’s eco-education corner, coronation picnic area, and a community kindness art installation. Amazingly, our inspiring unsung volunteers have been removing 25/30 agricultural bags of weeds from the border every year, that we are hoping will gradually reduce as the ground covering shrubs develop.

Thank You to all the amazing volunteers over the recent Saturdays (5/12.4.25) and throughout the week, at Woodend with yet another brilliant outcome. A massive thank you to: Jill, Joan, Diane (pictured) and Colin and Frank (not pictured),

Huge thanks to one and all,

FOMD
