Throughout 2024, the Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) have undertaken Maghull’s biggest ever environmental cleanup  (removed 267 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris) and obtained its largest funding for disabled access (£80,000), at Rowlands Dell (adjacent to the Hare and Hounds Pub) to make an accessible safe NHS health and wellness green space, free from harmful pollutants and accessible to all, whilst hopefully removing any threat of relentless housing developments on this cherished space.

We now need your help in the form of donations of woodland plants or cash donations to purchase woodland plants, to complete the most exciting stage of the project to restore nature and create a haven for the community and wildlife. Sadly, our optimistic expectations of support from the One-Stop Supermarket, Starbucks, Maghull & Sefton Councils have not been realised on this occasion, hence our new appeal for plants and disabled pathway.

You can donate funds through our yellow donate button on our webpage https://www.fomd.co.uk/ or if you would like to donate plants please email admin@fomd.co.uk

We are looking for: hydrangeas, rhododendrons, ferns, hollies, heathers, azaleas, tree ferns, laurels, etc to populate the area between the new upper path and the top of the slope.

Huge thanks for the recent support to:

  • Paul and Harry Richards (Richards Tree Services). Have remarkably and generously provided an absolutely invaluable seven tons of woodchip, logs for a stumpery and logs to create a stunning entrance archway.
  • Memorial Trees (pictured). Over the last couple of weeks we have been liaising with two families both who tragically lost their mothers prematurely, who approached us to plant trees in their names as a cherished living legacy. We are delighted and privileged to receive from (1) Shameem a beautiful 3m Norway Maple with a Crimson foliage (17.2.25)  and (2) Wes & his lovely young family who donated a red Japanese Fire Glow Maple which is pinky red in spring, dark green and red in summer and turns purple red in autumn (18.2.25).
  • Alison from Crosby who visits her mum in Maghull, has donated approximately 20 ferns (planted along the old path border) and 10 pink lilies (for the bog garden).
  • Sarah, Tom and Luke (Saxon Tree Services) for (1) donating and dropping off large logs to continue the natural new upper path border in addition, to (2) previously donating over 20 small trees lovingly grown from seeds collectively in pots which were planted at the junction of Park Lane and School Lane with recycled canes and spirals boosting previous trees that have been lost (pictured).
  • Gemma has donated a huge amount of different sized shrubs from her front and back garden, that will need some careful removal when we have time after the next two tree planting sessions.
  • Invaluable Cash donations totalling £282.69 towards our £1000 target have kindly and preciously been received from: Joan, Sarah, Dave, Alison, Paul, Clare, and Richard (Dr Richard Sloan retired Maghull GP now living in Dorset).

Finally, we receive some heartwarming and motivational thanks from the late Dr John Rowlands’ widow Catherine to say thank you for everyone’s contributions/support, ‘My daughter, grandson and I visited John’s Dell yesterday – it looks fantastic – everyone has worked so hard and I am so very grateful’. Please pass on my thanks to all the volunteers and good luck for your tree planting.

All the Best
