Maghull & Lydiate’s Surprise Trees.
Over the last two months Maghull and Lydiate (Sudell, Park and Molineux wards) appear to have received a nice surprise of approximately 45 large standard trees from Sefton Council who manage all the street trees throughout the borough, with a few more to follow.
Fantastic Investment.
Most of the trees, comprising variations of Maple, Pear, Birch, Acer, Prunus, have been planted in our towns grass verges with some exceptions through pavements. Each tree costs approximate £400 making this a significant investment of around £18,000 and pays for not only the tree but underground utility survey, permissions, planting, maintenance/watering and any potential replacement. The new trees are quite distinctive with their green irrigation bags attached, which is the new subcontractors preference (Arbourforce) who took over the long-term contract from JA Jones Tree Nursery.
Where Are the Trees Planted?
The pictured trees have been spotted in the following areas:
- 8 School Lane
- 6 Deyes Lane
- 2 Dover Road shops
- 4 Liverpool Road South at Woodend shops.
- 1 Station Road
- 13 Southport Road
- 1 Park Lane
Potential Replacements for Lost Trees?
The trees represent a welcome addition following Maghull’s recent loss of 58 mature street trees through disease (Ash Dieback and Dutch Elm Disease) on Northway (A59) between Robbins Island and Damfield Lane, and Gainsborough Avenue. We are delighted for this significant investment not only because it helps to (1) rebalance the loss of between approximately 300/500 mature trees overall in Maghull over the last five years, (2) the significant loss of green spaces through relentless housebuilding but also because (3) areas around Moorhey have not received any green investment for approximately 60 years. In the meantime, the Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) have continued their attempt to redress the balance to improve our environment and have now planted 16,000 trees over the last three years in parks, roads and schools.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in organising and the in decision process (Council officers, councillors and subcontractors) and the community through your council tax.
All the Best,
FOMD
