Following the Friends of Maghull & District’s (FOMD) ongoing appeal for cash and woodland plant donations, we were honoured to recently receive some very precious donations from some wonderfully friendly local residents (pictured before and after planting at Rowlands Dell):
- George, kindly donated a potted pine tree that he and his late wife bought at a Delamere Forest Christmas market, 23 years ago, which has strong links to his late wife and their granddaughter Emma.
- Eddie, generously donated potted horse chestnut trees that he had nurtured from seeds, which he had cherished for the memory of his two late wives.
- Kevin, very kindly donated a potted monkey puzzle and a fir tree, on top of other trees he previously gave, that he had inherited from his late brother who had a great passion for trees and gardening.
- We also received a rose to raise awareness of breast cancer, that will be highlighted by the kind donor in the near future.
The ongoing project is gradually starting to take shape, with one of the greatest rewards being the amount of people that are visiting – old, young, families who are simply taking time to ‘Dwell in the Dell’. Dr Rowlands widow – Catherine recently said, that her husband John would have been overjoyed that his living legacy would provide a continuation of health and happiness to the community he passionately served.
Please help the Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) with donations of woodland themed plants/shrubs or cash donations to buy the same so we can repopulate Rowlands Dell (adjacent to the Hare & Hounds Pub). We are looking for: hydrangeas, rhododendrons, ferns, hollies, heathers, azaleas, tree ferns, laurels, etc to populate the area between the new upper path and the top of the slope.
The community was unbelievable at our previous Woodend Project when local residents donated plants and funding amounting to 500 plants to form the largest community woodland border in Maghull’s history (50x4m). In Rowlands Dell we have already broken records by (1) undertaking Maghull’s biggest ever cleanup and (2) attracted Maghull’s largest ever green hard landscaping investment (see background) but (3) putting nature back into the Dell represents the most exciting stage.
You can donate funds through our yellow donate button on our webpage https://www.fomd.co.uk/ or if you would like to donate plants please email admin@fomd.co.uk
Background.
This beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 266 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris. In the two months of Stage II, that was completed in November, with our NHS landowner partners (expertly installed by subcontractors – PR England Landscapers) using a health and wellness grant fund (representing Maghull’s largest green investment) have installed an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations to provide accessibility for the whole community (accessible path, viewing/picnic area, sunken garden, bins, 10,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points, bug and bird boxes, and a dry waterfall feature). We are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help.
