SUMMARY:Welcome to Spring in Maghull!
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful displays in March and April & Can You Help for One Hour? \nWith the advent of spring on Sunday (1.3.26) some of the best and largest displays of spring bulbs are now peeping through at four of the Friends of Maghull & Districts (FOMD) projects. The bulbs flower for only a couple of weeks\, so please get to see them early to enjoy the first beautiful uplifting signs of spring. \n\nThe Stafford Moreton Way Eco-Garden and the Parkbourn Wildflower Garden are our smallest projects with hundreds of daffodil bulbs.\nThe Woodend Community Woodland Project (Bobbys Wood next to Bumbles Nursery) has about 4000 daffodil bulbs\, 100 tulips and thousands of bluebells starting to make an appearance in between the rear pathway and the town’s largest community flower border.\nThe Rowlands Dell NHS health and wellness green transformation project has just finished a display of hundreds of snowdrops\, which are being overtaken by Crocus\, 10\,000 daffodils\, hundreds of bluebells and countless white bluebells (which are in fact Three Cornered Leek due to the triangular stems\, garlic smell and white Bluebell type flowers).\n\nPlease add your photographs but in the meantime\, here are a few of the early displays. \n\n  \nPlease can you help by volunteering for one hour on Wednesday (4.3.26) or support with cash or woodland plant donations…. \nVenue & Tasks. \nWe would love your help for a spare one hour from 09.30 hours on Wednesday (4.3.26)\, at Rowlands Dell (opposite the newly refurbished Hare & Hounds PH\, L31 2HF)\, to make a fantastic difference to our environment. \nSeveral tasks to choose from: \n\nCreating a dead hedge to hide the new compost bin made from recycled pallets.\nWeeding new woodland.\nCutting back Ivy hedge (Main focus).\nPlanting recently donated plants.\n\nEquipment needed: sturdy boots\, garden gloves\, garden/hand fork\, kneeling pad\, spade\, loppers. \nHuge thanks to: \n\nColin\, Joan\, Frank\, Harry (DoE)\, Linda\, Diane and John who last Saturday (28.2.26) watered 38 newly planted rhododendrons\, consolidated unearthed rocks\, planted recently donated anemones\, red-hot pokers\, (courtesy of Neil) boxwood shrub (courtesy of Ken and Julie) and painstakingly reduced the perimeter Ivy hedge with three agricultural bags transported to the recycling centre.\n\nMany Thanks for the Fantastic Community Donated Plants: \n\nTwo Small Christmas Trees\, donated by Sarah (25.2.26)\nTwo small trees – Red Robin and Weeping Willow\, donated by Nicola (3.3.26)\nThank you to Kim for her kind offer of multiple shrubs that unfortunately were too established to transfer.\n\nIf You Would like to Help in the Future? \nVolunteer sessions (everyone is welcome without any commitment) can be found on our Events calendar page at https://www.fomd.co.uk/events/ where you will find all the details. \nCrowdfunding Campaign. We are hoping to raise further funds in 2026 for steps handrails\, eco-educational signage and mass planting for two of the four planned nature zones. Please donate online at www.fomd.co.uk or with cash at the Hare & Hounds PH\, Morrisons\, Esso Petrol Station. \nRowlands Dell Introduction (3min Video): https://youtu.be/lxrTdudVza8?si=AM_znsaI35Cose-M \nBackground and Exciting Developments at Rowlands Dell. \nThis beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades\, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan\, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 300 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris (2024). \nIn Stage II (November 2024)\, with the help of our NHS landowner partners we successfully obtained a health and wellness grant (Maghull’s largest green investment) to fund an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations. These features provided accessibility for the whole community and included: accessible path\, viewing/picnic area\, sunken garden\, bins\, 10\,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points\, bug and bird boxes\, and a dry waterfall feature). A Morrisons grant has enabled us to create the ongoing bog garden and wishing well. \nWe now need your help throughout 2026 for funding and planting to complete a beautiful restorative legacy haven. \nAll the Best\, \nFriends of Maghull & District (FOMD) \nTogether making Maghull a better place to live. \nMore information at www.fomd.co.uk including: (1) Events tab for everything about the meeting and (2) Projects tab for the project background. \nContact: admin@fomd.co.uk \n#fomdcic #Maghull #Environment

These features provided accessibility for the whole community and included: accessible path\, viewing/picnic area\, sunken garden\, bins\, 12\,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points\, bug and bird boxes\, and a dry waterfall feature).

SUMMARY:Urgent Help Needed to Plant 1400 Trees in Maghull/Lydiate.
DESCRIPTION:Please can you help to plant 1400 trees At St Thomas’ Primary School starting on Wednesday 25.3.26 between 09:30 hours and 15:30 hours. \nThe Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) in partnership with Mersey Forest have received the trees unexpectedly early and we desperately need to plant them before the half term holidays. Anytime you can spare will be invaluable and will make a huge restorative environmental difference to the sadly depleted nature due to neighbouring housebuilding. We are hoping to plant most of the trees on Wednesday (25.3.26) but any remaining trees will be planted on Friday (27.3.26) and possibly on Saturday (28.3.26) but please check our website’s ‘events’ tab calendar www.fomd.co.uk to confirm event status. \nTo register please contact us ASAP either by email at admin@fomd.co.uk or by phone on 07507759813  providing the following: \n\nDate and times available\nName\nContact Details: mobile phone number\, email address and postal address.\n\nVenue & Parking. \nSt Thomas’ Primary School\, Kenyons Lane\, Lydiate\, Liverpool\, Merseyside. L31 0BP. \nParking: on road parking available a short walk to the school on both Liverpool Road and Lambshear Lane. \nDates and Times. \n\nWednesday 25.3.26 starting 09:30 hours (main tree planting day)\, finishing at 15:30 hours\, break 12:00 – 13:00 hours.\nFriday 27.3.26 starting 09:30 hours\, finishing at 15:30 hours (or earlier if trees are planted)\, break 12:00 – 13:00 hours.\nSaturday 28.3.26 starting at 09:30 hours extra session just in case we have been unable to plant the trees on the previous days.\n\nEquipment Needed. \n\nEssentials: Sturdy boots\, garden gloves\, spade and suitable clothes for the weather and refreshments.\n\nTasks. \n\nPlanting small tree whips to form a wildlife friendly perimeter hedge\, supported with bamboo cane and plastic guards.\n\nBackground. \nCelebrating 1400 Trees for a Local School (totalling 20\,000 Trees for Maghull/Lydiate) following sad loss of neighbouring nature. \nThe Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) are absolutely delighted to have secured 1400 trees for St Thomas’ Primary School. \nLoss of Local Nature. \nFollowing the profound loss of the school’s neighbouring panorama of nature to housebuilding. The area has been identified as part of the local plan for considerable housing development\, increasing our 26\,000 population by approximately 25%\, resulting in considerable green space loss. FOMD is an award-winning environmental community group who have been transforming neglected spaces and planting 18\,000 trees\, providing a balance to the profound loss of green space due to ‘local plan’ housing development in Maghull/Lydiate. St Thomas’ Primary School is a small school which like many others sometimes struggle to meet their environmental aspirations whilst having to resource and prioritise other needs\, yet the school punches above its weight and is listed as the third best school on Merseyside. Sadly\, the unbroken beautiful countryside panorama and wildlife habitat on two sides of the school perimeter have been decimated with the building of 450 homes\, with upsetting responses due to the loss of wildlife habitat. \nSuccessful Application. \nFOMD made contact with the wonderfully friendly and receptive Mrs Alty (Head Teacher at St Thomas’) in 2025 and negotiated our shared aspirations for the benefit of the school\, community\, environment and the eco-educational needs of the children. We received fantastic support from our long-term friend at Mersey Forest (Ben Greenaway) who have provided an incredible grant for 1400 free trees\, canes\, tree guards\, 11 large standard trees\, and future maintenance costs. The planting will be undertaken by FOMD\, the school and community volunteers in March 2026. With immense gratitude to Mersey Forest. \nBenefits. \nWe will create a 275m mixed wildlife friendly hedging around the perimeter of the school and plant 11 standard trees to provide: \n\nEco-educational key stage opportunities for every child in the school to plant the trees and develop environmental knowledge and values\, supported by Mersey Forest. Emulating successful strategies from planting 18\,000 trees over the last four years\, in other schools\, public parks and roads.\nReplenish some of the wildlife habitat and food that is currently being disproportionately lost.\nReduce pollution by 60%\nEnhance climate action carbon sequestration.\nImprove health and wellness for the children\, teachers and the wider community.\nProvide positivity and inspiration for others to undertake future environmental projects for the good of the environment and community. Every key stage child\, teacher and family member will have the opportunity to plant trees\, develop environmental knowledge and values\, whilst also creating pride and inspiration. Which will be undertaken alongside FOMD community volunteers and the outreach team from Mersey Forest. The children will receive key stage pre and post information about tree planting and the wider environmental benefits. They will also excitedly develop an ecology community forestry school council and action group. The wider neighbouring community and environment will also derive multiple restorative benefits.\n\nThe mixed wildlife friendly hedging trees will comprise of:  hawthorn\, rowan\, blackthorn\, silver birch\, hazel\, common oak\, dogwood\, wild cherry\, hazel\, dog rose\, crab apple\, holly\, hazel\, downy birch and goat willow. \nFOMD are absolutely delighted to continue galvanising our kind and supportive community to work together to make Maghull/Lydiate a better place to live. We are overjoyed that this contribution will achieve a milestone of a culminative total of 20\,000 trees planted over the last five years in multiple parks\, roads and heart-warmingly in the following primary schools: Hudson (2023)\, St Georges (2024)\, St Gregory’s (2025) and now St Thomas’ (2026). Following the sad loss of hundreds of mature trees\, green spaces and climate change challenges we are immensely grateful to the whole community for helping to redress the balance for generations to come. \nPictured: FOMD planting with the children of St Gregory’s Primary School 2025. The picture was chosen to be used on the front page of the 2025 national annual report for the prestigious – The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) UK 2025 annual report and who part supplied our free trees last year. \nMany Thanks & Best Wishes\, \nFOMD \nTogether Making Maghull/Lydiate a Better Place to Live. \nWinner of the UK 2025 BBC One Show/RHS Growing Together Community Garden Award. \nWinner of the 2022 BBC Make a Difference Environmental Award. \nMore information at www.fomd.co.uk including: (1) Events tab for volunteering (2) Projects tab (3) FOMD News tab (4) Donations tab and much more. \nContact: admin@fomd.co.uk \n#fomdcic #Maghull #Environment #coopuk \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
