SUMMARY:Please Continue Unprecedented Community Support for Historic Maghull Town Council (MTC) Green Space.
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, the Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) responded to a community appeal by MTC to support our local parks.  We prioritised Woodend/Bobby’s Wood in which the planning involved consultation with countless experts\, completed a survey of over 600 residents on the doorstep and opened it out to thousands of residents online\, submitted a 20 page planning document to MTC (leaseholder) and Sefton Council (land owner) and miraculously raised £40\,000 in donations and £60\,000 in kind over the course of a year before starting the multi-project plan\, during the challenging height of the pandemic when kindness was even more overwhelming\, but now need a little help. \nAmazing History \nIt was interesting to discover during the planning stage that true to its historic name – Woodend\, it is a remnant of a mediaeval 2×5 mile wood that was owned by a Saxon called Uctred and mentioned in the 1066 Domesday Book. In addition\, it is close to the River Alt (meaning old) where Viking long boats sailed when it was closer to the coastal estuary. The neighbouring Liverpool Road South was a turnpike (meaning toll road). Whilst the only remnant of Woodend Farm\, before it was demolished to make way for Northway (A59)\, is the sandstone wall at Lidl’s car park. Also neighbouring the wood\, was the now demolished\, Broadwood Farm\, whose owner was rumoured to have planted a tree for each of his children. We recently counted 30 trees there! Finally\, there was a tragic murder in the Wood within the last century! \nWe have continued gradual improvements over the years and have dedicated four years of unsung weekly maintenance volunteer time to the Woodend site\, which last year resulted in the removal of over 30 agricultural bags of weeds and many other tasks. We hope our work has helped to lighten MTC’s load and provide some positivity\, during their challenging times to resurrect our town hall following last year’s fire\, whilst maintaining seamless services. \nPlease Help. \nConsequently\, we would be delighted if you could spare just one hour for the beginning of our 2026 maintenance work at the Woodend Community Woodland Project on Monday (2.2.26) at 09:30 hours. The sooner we can complete this work; it will enable us to develop new possibly award-winning projects elsewhere for the benefit of Maghull\, in the same vein as our ongoing 2025 BBC/RHS national award-winning Rowlands NHS Health and Wellness Project. \nVenue & Tasks. \nThe Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) need volunteers to meet at Woodend (next to Bumbles Children’s Nursery\, junction of Liverpool Road South and Northway) for one hour on Monday (2.2.26) at 09.30 hours\, to: \n\nTransfer one fruit trees to Rowlands Dell.\nShape wisteria arch\nStrim and clear choking grass from around 72 young underplanted trees\nRestore wooden reindeer.\n\nEquipment needed: sturdy boots\, garden gloves\, rake\, strimmer\, secateurs\, fork. \nThank You to Joan\, Graeme\, (pictured) Frank and Colin undertook the following \n\nReplaced 32 damaged trees.\nTransferred one fruit tree to Rowlands Dell.\n\n\nWeeded 72 new underplanted trees and woodland border.\nInstalled recycled tree stakes and strapping to support leaning tree.\n\nBest Wishes\, \nFriends of Maghull & District (FOMD) \nTogether making Maghull a better place to live. \nMore information at www.fomd.co.uk including: (1) Events tab for everything about the meeting and (2) Projects tab for the project background. \nContact: admin@fomd.co.uk \n#fomdcic #Maghull #Environment \n

SUMMARY:Help Weed Out a Couple of Problems in Maghull Beauty Spot.
DESCRIPTION:‘Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.’ Albert Einstein. \nPlease can you help – Following the successful big planting day (8.12.25) of 600 ferns\,1200 daffodil bulbs\, 85m path installation and recent planting of 50 pyracanthas at the national award-winning Rowlands Dell\, we need your help to finish it off. \nWe are not only hoping to undertake weeding\, hedge cutting\, and woodland planting\, but also we were kindly joined by local PCO Rafa\, who along with her colleagues will be weeding out and talking to a couple of problem visitors. \nVenue & Tasks. \nWe would love your help for a spare one hour from 09.30 hours on Sunday (8.2.26)\, at Rowlands Dell (opposite the newly refurbished Hare & Hounds PH\, L31 2HF)\, to make a fantastic difference to our environment. \nSeveral tasks to choose from: \n\nCreating a dead hedge to hide the new compost bin made from recycled pallets.\nWeeding new woodland.\nCutting back Ivy hedge.\nDigging approximately 40 holes for new national award-winning prize funded woodland plants.\n\nEquipment needed: sturdy boots\, garden gloves\, garden/hand fork\, kneeling pad\, spade\, loppers. \nHuge thanks to Joan\, Jill (pictured) and Colin & Frank (not pictured) who on (28.1.26) brilliantly achieved the following in only one hour: \n\nWheelbarrowed soil to backfill new path.\nCreated a dead hedge to hide the new compost bin made from recycled pallets.\nWeeding new woodland.\nCut back Ivy hedge.\n\nPictured: our amazing volunteers Joan & Jill with Rafa (PCO) in the newly planted and weeded wood area. \nIf You Would like to Help in the Future? \nVolunteer sessions (everyone is welcome without any commitment) can be found on our Events calendar page at https://www.fomd.co.uk/events/ where you will find all the details. \nCrowdfunding Campaign. So far\, with your 2025 help\, we have raised enough money to recently install a 50m and 35m path extension\, and plant 612 ferns\, 12 Amelanchier\, 50 Pyracanthas. However\, we are hoping to raise further funds in 2026 for steps handrails\, eco-educational signage and mass planting for two of the four planned nature zones. Please donate online at www.fomd.co.uk or with cash at the Hare & Hounds PH\, Morrisons\, Esso Petrol Station. \nRowlands Dell Introduction (3min Video): https://youtu.be/lxrTdudVza8?si=AM_znsaI35Cose-M \nBackground and Exciting Developments at Rowlands Dell. \nThis beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades\, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan\, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 300 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris (2024). \nIn Stage II (November 2024)\, with the help of our NHS landowner partners we successfully obtained a health and wellness grant (Maghull’s largest green investment) to fund an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations. These features provided accessibility for the whole community and included: accessible path\, viewing/picnic area\, sunken garden\, bins\, 10\,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points\, bug and bird boxes\, and a dry waterfall feature). A Morrisons grant has enabled us to create the ongoing bog garden and wishing well. \nWe now need your help throughout 2026 for funding and planting to complete a beautiful restorative legacy haven. \nAll the Best\, \nFriends of Maghull & District (FOMD) \nTogether making Maghull a better place to live. \nMore information at www.fomd.co.uk including: (1) Events tab for everything about the meeting and (2) Projects tab for the project background. \nContact: admin@fomd.co.uk \n#fomdcic #Maghull #Environment \n \n

SUMMARY:Award Winning (!) FOMD Meeting (Thursday 12.2.26 17.00hrs)
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nIt’s been a long time since the last October meeting but our next meeting is Thursday (12.2.26) at Parkhaven Trust on Liverpool Road South (L31 8BS) in the Willow Centre boardroom (which is the modern single story building on the right-hand side when you enter the main entrance of Parkhaven). I have a pass for the automatic main doors but in the unlikely event that we don’t spot you just knock on the window of the room on the right hand side of the automatic doors or phone me. Please don’t use the doorbell as can’t be reset. \nAs usual\, the attached agenda is packed with information\, with the intention of reading it beforehand\, so we can simply focus on the discussion points during the meeting and hopefully wrap everything up within about one hour. \nAs always all members are really welcome to attend. \nFOMD \n
