SUMMARY:Going Wild in the Centre of Maghull!
DESCRIPTION:Last week we created a bug hotel that needs populating with pictured bug friendly materials (just pop down any time with your children to insert your useful materials) and check out the neighbouring money log (pictured). Whilst this week the evolving bog garden (pictured – basically a pond with holes in that will be a magnet for wildlife) is starting to take shape and will look more natural over time. We have left the neighbouring area wild as a haven for wildlife whilst developing/disturbing other areas. \nIn the meantime\, the huge Wishing Well is also taking shape (pictured) with support timber for the roof being added by our partners – The Conservation Volunteers (TCV). We were also delighted\, after many weeks\, to finish planting hundreds of donated shrubs courtesy of the sadly closed Windmill Nurseries. \nOne Hour Volunteer Opportunities below. \nWe have regular welcoming multi-award-winning one-hour sessions you can just drop into any time without any commitment. No special skills needed just a healthy dose of enthusiasm. \nVenue & Tasks. \nThe Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) need volunteers to meet at Rowlands Dell (adjacent to the Hare & Hounds Pub) for one hour on Saturday (16.8.25) at 09.30 hours\, to: \n\nPlant Donated shrubs.\nSow grass seed where previous seeds have not taken.\nCut Car park hedge.\nWeeding\nComplete bug hotel construction.\nEmptying three bins\nWatering Yew tree hedge\nInstall Art Wheelbarrow!\n\nEquipment needed: sturdy boots\, garden gloves\, spade\, and garden fork \nThank You to:  FOMD Volunteers Jill\, Joanne\, Linda (pictured)\, Frank and Colin (not pictured) and TCV volunteers Neil\, Alex\, Peter\, Joe\, and Ricky for the midweek session (pictured13.8.25) who undertook the following: \n\nPlanted and watered in countless donated Pyracanthas\, box shrubs\, laurels in large sloped upper border\, courtesy of Windmill Nursery and Carol (St Joseph’s charity shop).\nBug hotel construction continued with bamboo and twigs inserted by Ruth and children (pictured).\nWeeding continued near pathway\, resulting in one agricultural bag for the recycling centre.\nA flowerbed border beautifully created with unused rocks (pictured) courtesy of TCV volunteers.\nBog garden – further rocks and soil inserted courtesy of TCV.\nWishing Well\, sturdy uprights and roof frame installed courtesy of TCV.\n\nSpecial Thanks to: Sarah Fairly (Aughton) for donating a massive array of sandstone free rocks some weeks ago and for Alan Frost (Grabber Driver) for the equally immense kindness in delivering them for free. \nCrowdfunding Donations Needed for Rowlands Dell. \nOur second milestone has just been achieved! After the last two successful months achieving our planned 50% target\, we want to achieve our 75% target in August with a little help from you. \nCurrently (14.8.25) we have 120 donors who have pledged £5673 which is 64% of our £8\,767 goal. SUMMARY:Bonus Hour at Maghull's Rowlands Dell & Great News.
DESCRIPTION:With so many periods of drought resulting in the driest summer for 50 years\, many of the trees are preserving their energy and dropping their leaves\, giving the beautiful but worrying appearance of autumn at Rowlands Dell at the moment. The only positive is that the weeds have slowed down enabling us to catch up with weeding\, to provide suitable ground conditions for a huge planting programme of woodland shrubs from future crowdfunding outcomes later in the year. \nOne Hour Volunteer Opportunities below. \nWe have regular welcoming multi-award-winning one-hour sessions you can just drop into any time without any commitment. No special skills needed just a healthy dose of enthusiasm. \nVenue & Tasks. \nThe Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) need volunteers to meet at Rowlands Dell (adjacent to the Hare & Hounds Pub) for one hour on Wednesday (20.8.25) at 09.00 hours\, to: \n\nMainly Weeding\nSow grass seed where previous seeds have not taken.\nCut Car park hedge.\nPopulating bug hotel construction.\nInstall Art Wheelbarrow!\n\nEquipment needed: sturdy boots\, garden gloves\, spade\, and garden or hand fork \nThank You to:  Linda\, Diane\, Sarah\, Christina (pictured 16.8.25)\, Frank and John (not pictured) who undertook the following: \n\nPlanted and watered in the final three of a hundred donated Pyracanthas\, box shrubs\, laurels in large sloped upper border\, courtesy of Windmill Nursery and Carol (St Joseph’s charity shop).\nNew Bug hotel continues to be populated with bamboo and twigs by children in the community.\nWeeding continued in the newly planted woodland area\, resulting in one agricultural bag for the recycling centre.\nEmptied three bins.\nWatered the 250 Yew trees hedge.\nInserted four border logs around junction flowerbed courtesy of Sarah (Saxon Tree Specialists).\n\nCrowdfunding Donations Needed for Rowlands Dell. \nUnbelievably our third milestone has just been achieved early! Following brilliant support from the Maghull community it has triggered match funding from Sefton Crowd supported by Sefton Council\, who donated £3100! \nCurrently (18.8.25) we have 121 donors who have pledged £8773 which is 101% of our October £8\,656 goal. We are enormously grateful for everyone’s incredible support. \nFinal Target: we now need further donations until the 20th  October (64 days)\, as the current total will enable us to create a 50 m extension to a circular health and wellness path\, but crucial future funds are still needed to undertake mass woodland planting. \nDONATE AND SEE SHORT INTRODUCTORY VIDEO AT   https://www.spacehive.com/rowlandsdell \nShare with everyone using the share button below the main picture on the website. \nBackground to Rowlands Dell. \nThis beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades\, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan\, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 300 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris. \nIn Stage II (completed in November)\, with the help our NHS landowner partners we successfully obtained health and wellness grant (Maghull’s largest green investment) to fund an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations.  These features provided accessibility for the whole community and included: accessible path\, viewing/picnic area\, sunken garden\, bins\, 10\,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points\, bug and bird boxes\, and a dry waterfall feature). \nWe are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help. \nMany Thanks and Best Wishes\, \nFOMD \nTogether making Maghull a better place to live. \nMore information at www.fomd.co.uk including: (1) Events tab for everything about the meeting and (2) Projects tab for the project background. \nContact: admin@fomd.co.uk \n#fomdcic #Maghull #Environment
