Venue & Tasks.
The Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) need volunteers to meet at Rowlands Dell (adjacent to the Hare & Hounds Pub) for one hour on Thursday (2.10.25) at 09.30 hours, to:
- Mainly Weeding and lopping tree and suckers to make wildlife twig pile for future eco education session.
- Trim car park hedge and ivy perimeter and install banner.
- Strim grass edge near rockery.
Equipment needed: sturdy boots, garden gloves, spade, and garden or hand fork, loppers.
Thank You.
We are always amazed by how much can be achieved in just one hour with a handful of volunteers for the good of Maghull. We met on Saturday (27.9.25) at the Rowlands Dell green restoration project and miraculously achieved the following:
- Trimmed perimeter Ivy hedge creating more space for pedestrians and wheelchairs/prams near the archway and removed two large agricultural bags of Ivy to the recycling centre. (Ian)
- Removed leaves & weeds from dry waterfall rockery and leaf blowed paths, filling one large agricultural bag to be recycled in the lower Dell (Jane, Linda, Dave, Nikki, Joan).
- Emptied three bins and mowed the newly sown grass sloping down from the picnic tables (Frank).
- Wishing Well roof, along with internal fixings for water barrel installed (Alex and his TCV Team – midweek). They also received expert stonemason advice from Ken (outgoing mayor) who was accompanied with the new Mayor of Maghull – Cllr Ross Ferguson (all pictured).
- 12 ft potted conifer and four laurels donation (Nikki (pictured with conifer moustache!) & Ian), kindly transported by Sarah and Luke (Saxon Tree Specialists who kindly donated a dozen logs to beautifully frame the junction borders (pictured)). Old Christmas tree removed to be recycled on site and replaced by donated conifer (Frank) and four laurels planted (Nikki).

Background to Rowlands Dell.
This beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 300 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris.
In Stage II (completed in November), with the help of our NHS landowner partners we successfully obtained a health and wellness grant (Maghull’s largest green investment) to fund an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations. These features provided accessibility for the whole community and included: accessible path, viewing/picnic area, sunken garden, bins, 10,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points, bug and bird boxes, and a dry waterfall feature). A Morrisons grant has enabled us to create the ongoing bog garden and wishing well.
We are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help.
Best Wishes,
Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD)
Together making Maghull a better place to live.
