Rowlands Dell Help Still Needed: for March Race to complete.
22 March @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
| FreeVenue & Tasks.
The Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) need volunteers to meet at Rowlands Dell (adjacent to the Hare & Hounds Pub) for one hour on Saturday (22.3.25) at 09:30 hours, to:
- Wheelbarrow topsoil around the (200) Yew tree hedge, rake woodchip back over and water, to improve and maximise future growth and survival.
- Remove debris created from Yew tree planting – whilst it is still visible to prevent damaging tools during future maintenance work.
- We could also break up the twigs to start creating multiple bug friendly tree and vegetation piles within the new woodland area, should time permit.
Equipment needed: sturdy boots, garden gloves, and any of the following – watering can, wheelbarrow, shovel, spade, woodsaw, loppers.
Huge thanks for any help you can provide and if you can’t make it please consider a financial donation to boost our green restoration planting spectacular by visiting www.fomd.co.uk and hit the yellow donation button at the top right of the page.
Lots more volunteer opportunities will be coming up soon, so please keep an eye on our events calendar.
Thank You to all the amazing volunteers last Saturday (15.3.25) with yet another brilliant outcome in which we were able to:
- Litter picked and emptied two bins.
- Removed and transferred the second of two mountains of woodchip around the plant donations, and various borders to suppress weed growth.
- Watered 225 Yew trees.
- More huge shrub donations from Gemma and countless London pride plants donated by Jean and thousands of bluebells and lilies donated by Frank were planted.
- Thank you to Sarah and Luke (Saxon Tree Services) for delivering two huge donated shrubs from Gemma, and for their thoughtful and constant supply of branches that my friend John G has cut to size with his chainsaws over four hours to eventually be used to populate a charity entrance arch.
- 19 oak trees planted at Parkbourn Square, to replace many trees that have been lost through disease.
- The second session on creating a large 8×3 m bog garden has resulted in our partners The Conservation Volunteers filling the hole with a liner and backfilling, with a return and completion date in early April.
- Thank you to Paul and Harry Richards (Richards Tree Services) invaluable for the second recent and massive load of woodchip
- A massive thank you to Winvic Construction and their subcontractors Huyton Asphalt, who worked tirelessly all day to replace the old path Kerbs prior to returning soon to create a new tarmac surface, for free to provide a safe experience for our most vulnerable residents.
It was another great team effort by our volunteers. Thank you to: Graeme, Joan (S), John (L), John (W), Joan (G) Ken, Dorina (pictured) Colin and Frank (not pictured). Not forgetting, Jill who has been attending throughout the week removing large amounts of debris and litter dug up when we were planting the Yew tree hedge and for her lovely Fern donation. Graham also kindly popped in during the week to plant more London Pride donated by Jean and a small conifer. Final thanks to our super friendly and helpful neighbour for providing top ups of our water butts using her hose pipe.
Huge thanks to one and all,
FOMD
Together making Maghull a better place to live.
Background.
This beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 266 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris. In the two months of Stage II, that was completed in November, with our NHS landowner partners (expertly installed by subcontractors – PR England Landscapers) using a health and wellness grant fund (representing Maghull’s largest green investment) have installed an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations to provide accessibility for the whole community (accessible path, viewing/picnic area, sunken garden, bins, 10,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points, bug and bird boxes, and a dry waterfall feature). We are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help.
