With so many periods of drought resulting in the driest summer for 50 years, many of the trees are preserving their energy and dropping their leaves, giving the beautiful but worrying appearance of autumn at Rowlands Dell at the moment. The only positive is that the weeds have slowed down enabling us to catch up with weeding, to provide suitable ground conditions for a huge planting programme of woodland shrubs from future crowdfunding outcomes later in the year.

One Hour Volunteer Opportunities below.

We have regular welcoming multi-award-winning one-hour sessions you can just drop into any time without any commitment. No special skills needed just a healthy dose of enthusiasm.

Venue & Tasks.

The Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) need volunteers to meet at Rowlands Dell (adjacent to the Hare & Hounds Pub) for one hour on Wednesday (20.8.25) at 09.00 hours, to:

  • Mainly Weeding
  • Sow grass seed where previous seeds have not taken.
  • Cut Car park hedge.
  • Populating bug hotel construction.
  • Install Art Wheelbarrow!

Equipment needed: sturdy boots, garden gloves, spade, and garden or hand fork

Thank You to:  Linda, Diane, Sarah, Christina (pictured 16.8.25), Frank and John (not pictured) who undertook the following:

  • Planted and watered in the final three of a hundred donated Pyracanthas, box shrubs, laurels in large sloped upper border, courtesy of Windmill Nursery and Carol (St Joseph’s charity shop).
  • New Bug hotel continues to be populated with bamboo and twigs by children in the community.
  • Weeding continued in the newly planted woodland area, resulting in one agricultural bag for the recycling centre.
  • Emptied three bins.
  • Watered the 250 Yew trees hedge.
  • Inserted four border logs around junction flowerbed courtesy of Sarah (Saxon Tree Specialists).

Crowdfunding Donations Needed for Rowlands Dell.

Unbelievably our third milestone has just been achieved early! Following brilliant support from the Maghull community it has triggered match funding from Sefton Crowd supported by Sefton Council, who donated £3100!

Currently (18.8.25) we have 121 donors who have pledged £8773 which is 101% of our October £8,656 goal. We are enormously grateful for everyone’s incredible support.

Final Target: we now need further donations until the 20th  October (64 days), as the current total will enable us to create a 50 m extension to a circular health and wellness path, but crucial future funds are still needed to undertake mass woodland planting.

Background to Rowlands Dell.

This beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 300 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris.

In Stage II (completed in November), with the help our NHS landowner partners we successfully obtained health and wellness grant (Maghull’s largest green investment) to fund an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations.  These features provided accessibility for the whole community and included: accessible path, viewing/picnic area, sunken garden, bins, 10,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points, bug and bird boxes, and a dry waterfall feature).

We are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help.

Many Thanks and Best Wishes,

FOMD
