This week, we learnt that Maghull has been nominated for a BBC Make a Difference 2025 Green Award. The Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) have achieved miracles (www.fomd.co.uk) in our community but only with the fantastic support at every stage from our community. The BBC judges have a daunting task to choose four finalists from the many remarkable and inspiring nominees from across Merseyside before mid-June, but nevertheless they should all be considered winners for their community kindness.

Whatever the outcome, it is lovely that our community has received this kind tribute highlighted below from the nominator:

Soon after FOMD’s inception this small humble group were overwhelmed to win a 2022 Make A Difference Award not for themselves, from their perspective, but for their community! Astoundingly, since then, their unprecedented new projects  ( have been even larger, whilst maintaining multiple transformative previous projects.  The example below, is a small window into this project, many other transformed neglected green spaces, and the tireless loving work undertaken daily, both day and night, while some members are also caring for relatives with life-threatening illness. I am constantly overwhelmed with messages expressing gratitude and inspiration about these down-to-earth, good-humoured inspiring ambassadors in our midst who offer a beacon of hope in challenging times.

Rowlands NHS Dell is Maghull’s largest ever cleanup and green investment. Once a historic overgrown quarry, full of 30 years of pollutants, uniquely positioned next to a busy shopping and medical centre. FOMD gained support and engagement from every aspect of our community (1) over one year to painstakingly cut and rake every inch removing 300 bags of litter and 25 tons of debris beneath the ground, (2) raised nearly £100,000 to create the best possible accessibility features including pathways with rails, sunken garden, viewing/picnic area, mindful water features, and (3) planting thousands of donated shrubs and trees, with many eco-educational bio diverse features offering a tranquil, cherished, valued inspirational restorative haven for humans and wildlife at the heart of the community.

Alongside this project FOMD have planted 18,000 eco-educational, climate action trees in schools, roads and parks.
