Paul Pruden (Horticultural Manager at Mersey Care NHS Trust) and his team have been an integral part of every project we have undertaken, and has kindly provided project support and advice at Rowlands Dell throughout.

Remarkably Paul and his team have undertaken to our immense gratitude the following:

  • Grass Sowing preparation. Previously they spent several half days flailing the impregnable brambles and ivy with a tractor and strimmers to enable our volunteers to rake every inch to remove 30 years of pollutants. Then more recently they raked the area to remove further debris and break up the soil to prepare and grass seed the slope, from the picnic area to the entrance archway path. We have cut the grass a couple of times since it has started to establish despite the long periods without rain, and although there are a couple of expected patches overall the grass is looking absolutely brilliant.
  • Yew Tree Hedge Preparation. Prior to planting our Tree Council grant funded Yew tree hedge they kindly broke up the soil and following the planting of the 250 trees by volunteers they return to spread several tons of soil around the tree bases to maximise their growth.

With huge thanks to Paul and his brilliant team.

Background to Rowlands Dell.

This beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 266 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris.

In Stage II (completed in November), with the help our NHS landowner partners we successfully obtained health and wellness grant (Maghull’s largest green investment) to fund an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations.  These features provided accessibility for the whole community and included: accessible path, viewing/picnic area, sunken garden, bins, 10,000 bulbs and planting at small junction points, bug and bird boxes, and a dry waterfall feature).

We are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help.

Many Thanks and Best Wishes,
