Maghull’s 2018 Parkbourn Wildflower Garden Project that transformed a profound ASB grot spot into an oasis has had some limited success with growing wildflowers in this triangular space. However, following brilliant advice from Christine Leung (pictured at one of many Bootle community projects) and Richard Scott (locally based national wildflower experts) they advised that we had been too kind to the wildflowers by providing the original 6 inches of topsoil and that wildflowers thrive on less fertile mediums particularly grit sand.
Consequently, we rolled out a weed suppressant membrane (donated from the sadly closed Windmill Nursery), amazingly received a free donation of eight tons of grit sand (from Dowhigh Construction) and obtained the recommended annual/perennial wildflower seeds and plugs from Chris and Richard.
Last week (29.4.26) we excitedly/torturously turned the eight tons of grit sand to break it up, raked, sowed, raked again and watered. We are now waiting with great expectation for a successful display that we hope to roll out to our other sites where we have some wildflowers.

Parkbourn Background:
The Friends of Maghull & District’s (FOMD) first (2018) is one of many local green transformations. This small area had been blighted with 20 years of profound antisocial and fly tipping behaviour, was transformed into a much-visited inspiring green wildlife oasis.
