By taking part, you’re contributing to the world’s largest garden wildlife survey.

Almost 600,000 people participated last time around, helping to form a clear picture of how the UK’s birds are faring.

It just requires an hour of your time to record the birds that land in your garden or outdoor space, and the RSPB provides an easy to follow guide to help you identify the different species you could see.

What is Big Garden Birdwatch?

Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey. Every year, hundreds of thousands of nature lovers like you take part, helping to build a picture of how garden birds are faring.

Nature needs you

As the climate and nature crisis continues, it’s never been more important to see how our birds are faring. Our Big Garden Birdwatchers have counted our birds since 1979. So, if you take part in 2026, you’ll join a community that’s committed to keeping an eye on our feathered friends.

Not an expert? No worries!

When you sign up, you’ll receive our free ID guide to help tell your rockin’ Robins from your cha-cha-Chaffinches.

Every Birdwatch counts

Across the UK, over 590,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2025, counting a whopping 9.1 million birds! House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts of these chirpy birds are down by 60% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979. In fact, we’ve lost 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 60 years. With birds facing so many challenges, it’s more important than ever to get involved in the Birdwatch. Every bird you do – or don’t – count will give us a valuable insight into how garden birds are faring.
