The postponed 2024/25 MTC Civic Awards were presented at The Venue, St. George’s Social Club on 6.11.25. With many thanks to everyone involved in organising this event celebrating and reminding us of the inspiring community kindness that surrounds us every day in Maghull. There were six categories, with two removed from the previous year (best local business and environmental due to only one nomination for each, we hope MTC retain the sports category despite a single outstanding nomination on this occasion) to create more generic options.
The Sports Award was won by Ron Young & Maghull FC (Ron pictured with Cllr Peter Darlington) and nominated by FOMD.
- Sports Award Awarded for outstanding contributions to sport or leisure in Maghull. This can be any age, type of organisation, business or charity based in Maghull.
- Please state in no more than 200 words details for which you consider that the nominee should receive a Civic Award.
I am proud to nominate Ron Young (Maghull FC Chairman) and the whole of Maghull FC.
Ron deserves the highest accolade for his unrivalled 60 year, on and off pitch contribution, to enable our town’s club to achieve the highest position in its 104-year history, unrivalled family orientated community integration, boasting an unprecedented diverse 48 community teams, whilst supporting countless community good causes.
However, I suspect Ron would be the first to state that there is no ‘I’ in team and for that reason I would like to nominate Ron alongside the whole football club. They have collectively provided unprecedented inspirational benefits both locally and nationally, which our whole town should be immensely proud of. Hopefully, with your kind consideration they should deservedly be acknowledged and commended through this nomination.
Maghull FC (founded in 1921) started one of its most exciting seasons ever on the 27.7.24 at the Old Hall ground on Hall Lane (their home since 1954), when following promotion with success on and off the pitch they have been accepted back into the North West Counties Division One League, where they had originally been founder members in 1988, following an absence of 26 years, and crowned with a cup game against the historic Bury FC.
During the 26-year absence Maghull FC has experienced lots of success on the pitch but until they received planning permission (with support from MTC) in October 2023 to enhance the ground facilities, they had previously been unable to adhere to the criteria to achieve promotion on numerous occasions.
This is Maghull’s most astounding year (2024/2025) and the culmination of 104 years of community heroes dedicating their lives for the immeasurable good of our community.
Imagine the lengths of altruistic commitment/investment involved in:
- Sensitively motivating and shaping a young child’s myriad of needs as part of one team and then multiply that by 48 teams.
- Whilst maintaining and achieving the highest standards/values both off and on the pitch at every level.
- Maintaining a community orientated club structure and funding to create the facilities and opportunities for all, in terms of physical and psychological health and wellness!
Well, this is what is being achieved by extraordinary role models who are intelligent, pioneering, sensitive, forward-thinking, kind, warm-hearted, good-humoured inspirational, dedicated, passionate, selfless people from Maghull who serve this club at every level.
The values and attributes are infectious resulting in people dedicating their lives to playing, supporting and running the club. Players are welcomed and come from our community, forming many men’s, women’s and a host of youth teams for boys and girls.
“It’s very important to encourage kids to get into football from a young age because it gives them values because they have people coaching, guiding and helping them and it gives children something to focus on.”
“There are not that many clubs that have gone for 100 years. There are thousands of clubs, but only a matter of hundreds who have gone for so long. It is all down to the people, bricks and mortar don’t do anything for anybody – it’s down to the people who have been involved for so many years who set the standards, and it is up to us to maintain them and keep the club going.” Ron Young (2022)
Maghull FC provides countless physical, social, psychological, charitable benefits and values for everyone involved in the club and the wider community and are unbelievably going from strength to strength, imbuing pride and inspiration that we should commend and celebrate.
Letter of Support from Adam Edwards
I am writing a supportive letter on behalf of the committee at Maghull football club to nominate Ron Young (Maghull FC Chairman) and the whole of Maghull FC.
Over the last 12 months, Ron as chairman has led Maghull FC back to semi-professional football in the northwest counties this has been a 26 year absence
During the 26-year absence Maghull FC has experienced lots of success on the pitch but until they received planning permission (with support from MTC) in October 2023 to enhance the ground facilities, they had previously been unable to adhere to the criteria to achieve promotion on numerous occasions. All of this made possible by a group of people within the club on the playing committee.
Maghull Football club is the pinnacle of physical and psychological health and wellness in the area. Maghull FC has 45 youth teams made up of boys and girls aged 4 to 18. Then giving these boys and girls the pathway to semi-professional football within their local town.
The club values itself as being a community club and within the last 12 months we have certainly shown that doing charity events for local charities, Community days and remembering local people we have unfortunately lost. This all at the club at the heart of our community.
This community football club now sees the community come together to support a local side full of local talent and gives the ‘dream’ for local boys and girls of playing under the lights at Maghull
