Background:

The Friends of Maghull and District (FOMD) Stafford Moreton Way Wildflower Ecology Project

We started the ongoing Stafford Morton Way project in 2019, due to concerns about the unkempt overgrown grassed areas in Maghull’s highest footfall area. We crowdfunded £6500 to create an urban wildflower meadow, to promote & inspire wellbeing, community engagement, and raise awareness of endangered wildlife, plastic recycling, and signpost people to underused natural local resources.

A fantastic addition, to the ecology project was the creation of a full-sized galvanised mesh steel rhinoceros’ sculpture, that was created at considerable discount by Castle Fine Arts Foundry, to be utilised as a receptacle for clean plastic bottle tops, to highlight endangered wildlife, the importance of plastic recycling and provide a beautiful sculpture, representing only the second piece of public art in Maghull.

Maghull High School and Southport Art College responded to FOMD to utilise some of the donated bottle tops to create further community artwork. Consequently, over the last year they have created these uplifting, poignant works of art for the whole community to enjoy and engender a continued sense of pride in our children.

Kier construction very kindly supplied the materials and constructed seven fantastic cabinets, whilst their local subcontractors MJB Joinery kindly installed them over one day. Whilst the neighbouring NHS Medical Centre and the local shops have given permission for the installation.
